The Dean Chatham Interview

We did an interview with Buffalo rapper Dean Chatham when our website first launched in March 2016. Since this is our comeback, we figured it would be best to start this thing with a new interview with Dean.

Dean has a new music video out for his song Blueberries (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEE8FbPYr3w). He also has a new mixtape out the Red vs. Blue EP, you can check that out here (https://deanchatham.bandcamp.com/album/blue-vs-red-ep).

Given our theme of redemption, we thought it would be a cool idea, to ask Dean ten questions, and he answered them as if it were one year ago and if it was today.

One Year Ago

1. What are your goals for music next year?

One of my goals this year is to open up for Rae Sremmurd at Wake Forest University’s Spring concert. I heard that there was going to be a battle of the bands to see who wins the slot and let’s just say my band has been battling for a while now so I’m pretty excited.

Another big goal of mine is to release an official album on iTunes and Spotify. So far all I released was EP’s and mixtapes which are cool but they don’t have that super polished vibe that an album brings.

I would also like to make the Dean’s list academically but hey that’s always a tossup smh.

2. What does hard work mean to you? What’s the minimum/maximum you allow yourself to work in a day?

Hard work means putting your head down and grinding. I don’t care if you’re ramming your head into a wall, as long as you are trying and failing/succeeding and learning from that, I think you’re working hard. Just be careful not too hurt yourself too much lol. I work myself to death but I usually don’t end up dying.

3. Who’s in your headphones most right now?

Gotta say Robert Glasper, Rakim, Travis Scott, old school Common, and Tame Impala… they’re all fire

4. You have one sentence to describe your music and the effect you hope that it has on people.

Inspiration through dedication and fun.

5. How do you get in the right headspace before performing?

I usually like to be in the bathroom hyping myself up and making sure I look good. I like walking on stage like a boxer walks into a ring. Nobody talk to me, I’m finna explode.

6. What does happiness look like to you?

Appreciating the small things.

7. What makes you the saddest?

The idea of not being able to be the best. I don’t let that demon creep into my soul.

8. What do you do to relax when not making music?

NBA, playing basketball, smoking, working out because all these things let my mind run free and not be bogged down by “adult” worries.

9. What’s up with Donald Trump?

He’s someone who I don’t know much about but I feel like I should. What’s all the hype about?

10. What’s next for Dean Chatham?

Depends what time frame your giving. 1 year, graduating and then pursing music super super hardcore. 3 years, blowing up and touring the nation. 5 years, running the rap game without a doubt. Soliding my position in rap hall of fame.

**Bonus: What’s the worst song you’ve ever made, why?

Haven’t made it yet lol hopefully won’t ever.

Present Day

1. What are your goals for music next year?

I plan to have 8 projects out which means I have to finish 2 more projects by the end of 2018. I think it’s important to let my fans see how quickly and efficiently I grow musically.

I plan to have performed in 10 different states, and so far I’ve tackled New York (Brooklyn, Buffalo, Albany, Rochester), Georgia (Atlanta, Macon), North Carolina (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte), and Ontario, Canada (Toronto). 4 down, 6 to go!

2. What does hard work mean to you? What’s the minimum/maximum you allow yourself to work in a day?

Hmm, nowadays it’s more about working hard to work smart. I see that it’s much more enjoyable to work hard when you know you’re working smart and towards a calculated goal. I allow myself to work until I am utterly bored and fed up with anything music related lol. Then I go see my best friend or girlfriend or something.

3. Who’s in your headphones most right now?

Me, my live instrumental and the new beats that I’m writing to… other than that I like listening to a select number of songs like 21 Savage “Bank Account” or Washed Out “Feeling it all around”. I’m picky af rn cause I’m in a writing/performing groove I guess. Need to focus.

4. You have one sentence to describe your music and the effect you hope that it has on people.

Loving, caring, enthusiastic, sophisticated, go-getter music.

5. How do you get in the right headspace before performing?

I literally take one tug of weed, then I do some shadow boxing with my best friend E so I can get that killer instinct feeling going. Because on stage I’m making a killing. No games.

6. What does happiness look like to you?

Loving my loved ones and them loving me back and having fun with my music and brining joy to people and feeling good about living life in general because we don’t have an infinite time here.

7. What makes you the saddest?

Still don’t like to think about this but I’d say maybe falling out with my gf and knowing that it was my fault lol.

8. What do you do to relax when not making music?

Sleep, watch movies or basketball, and EAT. Love eating… a lot. Only vegan tho.

9. What’s up with Donald Trump?

Mannn, just tell him to leave me alone and try not to Tweet so much… Twitter wasn’t made for those over 35… Am I right or am I right?

10. What’s next for Dean Chatham?

Dean Chatham is a living fantasy. Expect the wildest things possible from this man and I think you’ll still be falling short of what he’ll actually be able to accomplish. The dude is seriously scary in terms of potential. I’m not sure what a peak means to him or if he will reach one cause any boundary is not safe when it comes to this guy. Just watch him fly!

**Bonus: What’s the worst song you’ve ever made, why?

Still haven’t made it yet hehe.
